LET'S GO! As a trainer who's worked out at every gym in Playa, I got you.
Smart Fit on the highway. This is your spot. Full equipment, free weights up to 50 kg, multiple squat racks, cables, the works. AC blasts cold. $699 MXN/month with no contract commitment and 24/7 access. That's $40 USD. For what you get, nothing beats it in this city.
Evolve Gym near Playacar. Smaller space but excellent equipment. This is where the serious lifters train. $800-1,000 MXN/month. The community here is solid, people push each other.
Iron Gym in Gonzalo Guerrero. Old school. Heavy iron, no-frills, dumbbells go HEAVY. $500-700 MXN/month. No AC, just fans. This is the powerlifters' den. If you want that raw gym energy where everybody's there to work, this is it.
Anytime Fitness is there if you've got a global membership already. Clean, air-conditioned, standard equipment. Gold's Gym near centro runs $800-1,000/month, decent location.
Heads up: most gyms charge an "inscripción" (enrollment fee) of $500-1,500 MXN. ALWAYS ask about promos, beginning of the month they usually waive it. Peak hours are 6-8 AM and 5-8 PM, same as everywhere. Some places ask for a "constancia médica," just grab one from a pharmacy doctor for $50-100 MXN, takes 5 minutes.
And don't sleep on the free options! The calisthenics park at Parque Fundadores has pull-up bars, dip bars, parallel bars, right on the beach. Nothing like cranking out sets with the Caribbean in front of you. Beach running at sunrise? Chef's kiss.
My recommendation: Smart Fit for the price-to-equipment ratio, no question. But if you want that hardcore atmosphere where everyone's grinding, grab a day pass at Iron Gym ($100 MXN) and see if it's your vibe.
