We're a family of four with two young kids, both working, and own a starter 3-bedroom townhouse. We're curious to know what other families in a similar stage of life are spending per month. We cook most of our meals at home and occasionally order takeout. Our monthly expenses are around $10k, but we're not looking for budgeting advice, just a realistic comparison.

I'm at around $6.5k/month for my large detached home with two kids. My mortgage payment is bi-weekly at $1500, and gas and groceries are about $8k. We have a combined household income of $185k/year.

I'm struggling to keep up with the expenses in this area, earning barely half of what others are spending. Despite this, I feel relatively financially secure.

Comfort is key. The pressure to earn more can lead to stress, lack of sleep, and long working hours. This can take a toll on one's well-being. In contrast, some people may work themselves to exhaustion, only to find that more money doesn't necessarily lead to a better life.

I'd say you're coming out on top in my opinion.

These households likely combine their incomes and receive some government assistance for their child. As a single-income household, you're probably doing alright and living comfortably, especially considering the high cost of living on 17th Avenue SW.

Some of the numbers here make my head spin. As a single dad with a teenager, my expenses are around $4k/month for rent and bills, and I'm barely breaking even once the child tax benefit is factored in.

It seems like a lot of families are spending around $5k per month on non-housing expenses. We're in a similar situation, with a mortgage of $3,300, tax of $700, and utilities of $1,000. Our non-housing expenses are around $5k per month, and I'm not sure how to cut back on that.

Since discussing money and budgeting is a bit taboo, maybe it's helpful to share our own budget. We export all our purchases as a .csv and categorize them, so we can see if our expectations held up. Here's how September shook out for us: we have one kid and one car, and we mostly walk or bike to most things, which keeps our gas reasonable.
