I've noticed a lot of worms coming out with the rains this past week in Orlando. It's like they're everywhere. Has anyone else seen this?

Worms require a constant supply of moisture to breathe and survive. As a result, they can move more efficiently across damp surfaces than through compacted soil.

I used to see a lot of worms when I was growing up in Florida, but now they're nowhere to be found. Sidewalks are bare of the dried-out carcasses, and ants aren't swarming the earthworms like they used to. It's like the whole ecosystem has changed.

Worms aren't exclusive to Orlando, and their presence is actually a sign of a balanced ecosystem. They tend to migrate to the surface to escape waterlogged conditions and return underground when the soil becomes more hospitable. I recall trying to steer clear of them while biking in a different region as a child.

If you encounter worms, it's a good idea to relocate them to a more suitable environment, such as a patch of soil or a damp area with some leaf litter. This is especially important for their survival, as they play a vital role in maintaining soil health and facilitating plant growth. You can use a small branch or a large leaf to gently move them to a safer location.
