Los Cabos Shifts Gear: Golf as the New Luxury Driver

In the past, Los Cabos has been all about the beaches, marlin, and sunsets. But as I, Dana Whitfield, have watched the town evolve over my seven years running a surf school here, a new player is stepping onto the scene: golf. Now, local officials are banking big on this green pastime, seeing it as a key to attracting high-spending tourists who leave a hefty economic impact.

Los Cabos Shifts Gear: Golf as the New Luxury Driver

The numbers back up this strategy. According to the Los Cabos Tourism Board (Fiturca), golf tourists play an average of 2.8 rounds per stay and spend around 11,000 pesos daily, compared to the more modest 9,000 pesos for the average visitor. That’s a difference of 2,000 pesos per day, which can add up over a week or more. And with around 160,000 such travelers annually, the potential is enormous.

Right now, Los Cabos boasts 19 full 18-hole courses, many designed by golf royalty like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. The World Wide Technology Championship, a PGA TOUR event, is returning for its 20th edition in November, underscoring the destination’s commitment to this high-end niche. The tournament has provided over 30,500 birdies and $4 million in donations, not to mention 11,000 volunteers annually.

For a place that has long relied on affordability and accessibility, positioning itself as a golf capital is a smart move. It allows Los Cabos to compete in a market where fewer destinations can follow, and where the economic benefits are clear. But will this focus on golf tourism come at the expense of the surf culture that drew me here in the first place? Only time will tell.
