Another fee to be aware of is the Incidental Security Deposit, or 'hold,' which is placed on your credit card by the resort. This is not an additional payment but a temporary pre-authorization to cover potential damages or upgrades. To protect your cash flow, always use a dedicated travel credit card for this purpose. The hold can range from $200 to $500 depending on the luxury tier of the property.

A less common but still prevalent fee is the Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markup. While not mandatory, DCC can be an expensive trap, especially for first-timers. When you pay for your environmental tax or room using your credit card, the hotel may convert the transaction to your home currency, adding a percentage markup.
