I'm planning a week-long trip to Calgary in mid October and want to spend most of my time walking around different neighbourhoods, reading and writing in cafes and libraries. I'd like to know if I'll need a car to get around.

Calgary's downtown area is quite vehicle-centric, but there are some pedestrian-friendly options. You can explore 8th Avenue, 9th Avenue in Inglewood, and 17th Avenue. The LRT is also a convenient way to get around, and the zoo station provides access to Inglewood and Bridgeland. If you're staying at the airport or in the suburbs, a car becomes necessary, but this also gives you the opportunity to explore nearby towns like Canmore, Banff, Black Diamond, Cochrane, or take the Highway 40/Cowboy Trail loop.

Calgary boasts an extensive network of bike pathways, with over 1,000 kilometers of routes. While this is considered the most extensive urban pathway network in North America, it's worth noting that some roads can be hazardous for cyclists, especially during certain seasons.

While it's true that you can access the bike pathways from the downtown core, as a part-time cyclist, I prefer to avoid certain roads during this time of year due to safety concerns. I wouldn't recommend attempting a challenging ride like the Peloton du Macleod.

The city's layout depends on where you stay. If you're in the downtown core, you can easily walk to trendy areas like Kensington, Inglewood, Marda Loop, and 17th Avenue. However, if you want to explore other parts of the city, a car is recommended, as the public transit system is notoriously underdeveloped.

We visited Calgary twice this year and managed without a car both times. The first time, we stayed in a neighborhood above Glenmore Reservoir, which had reliable bus service to downtown, allowing us to explore several areas, including the reservoir and Weaslehead Flats. The second time, we stayed in a neighborhood near downtown, and it was super walkable. We were able to accomplish everything we wanted to do on foot. It's possible to get around without a car if you choose the right location.

As a local without a car, I've found that most of what I do is accessible by train. If you stay in downtown Calgary and the weather isn't bad, you can access many interesting areas on foot or by train. However, it's essential to research specific activities, as some may require a car. If you're looking for a general good time exploring cafes and neighborhoods, staying downtown or near a train station and being willing to walk a bit can make it unnecessary to have a car. Trains are generally reliable, but buses with multiple transfers might be more convenient with a ride-sharing service.
