Eye Exams: More Than Just Vision Check-Ups for Expats in Calgary
As an expat in Calgary since 2019, I’ve learned that eye exams are much more than just a check-up for your vision. They can reveal hidden health issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

During a comprehensive eye exam, an optometrist can spot signs of more than 270 health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and neurological issues. This is because the eye is the only part of the body where blood vessels and nerve tissue can be examined without surgery. Regular eye exams establish a baseline for each patient’s eye health, making it easier to detect subtle changes.
In Alberta, eye exams are covered by Alberta Health Care for children under 19, adults 65 and over, and those with medically necessary or urgent eye care. However, for the rest of the population, regular eye check-ups are essential. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends:
- Babies: first exam between 6 and 9 months
- Preschoolers (2-5): at least one exam
- School-aged children (6-18): every year
- Adults (19-64): at least every two years
- Seniors (65+): every year
Considering the stakes, especially for children, regular eye exams can significantly impact their learning and overall health. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear; they might not be noticeable until it’s too late.
