Calgary Transit Converts Free LRT Park and Ride Spots to Reserved: What It Means for You
Raising a family in Calgary since 2020, I’ve seen the city evolve in many ways. One recent change that caught my attention is Calgary Transit’s decision to convert 328 free parking stalls into reserved spots at four LRT Park and Ride locations, starting October 1. This move is significant for expats and digital nomads like myself, as it directly impacts daily commuting patterns and parking availability.

The conversion will take place at Brentwood, Dalhousie, Tuscany North, Tuscany South, and Somerset-Bridlewood LRT stations. Currently, the cost for a reserved stall is $95 per month, plus GST. While the primary goal is to meet customer demand for guaranteed parking options, it does raise questions about the trade-offs. More people will have the option of a secure parking spot, but the availability of free stalls will decrease, making it harder for those who might not be able to afford the reserved rate.
For those who rely on free parking, the change could be a challenge. The reserved stalls are only open from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., leaving the rest of the day for others to park. This could lead to more competition for parking spaces, especially in areas where demand is high. If you’re planning your daily commute or looking for a place to park, you’ll need to adapt to this new reality.
The conversion is expected to generate $375,000 in additional annual revenue for Calgary Transit. While this is not the primary motivation, it’s a welcome boost for the transit system. However, it’s worth considering the impact on those who might struggle with the cost. If you’re currently using the free stalls, you might need to reassess your parking strategy or explore other options like carpooling or public transit.
