Frequently Asked Questions
How does the salary-needed calculation work?
We compute a cost-of-living index for each city from seven real-world categories: rent, groceries, dining out, transport, utilities, internet, and fitness. Your equivalent salary equals your current salary multiplied by the ratio of the destination index to your origin index. For example, if your city scores 100 and the destination scores 60, a $100,000 salary becomes $60,000 — meaning you need 40% less to live the same way.
Is this the same as Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)?
It is conceptually similar but uses granular, city-level cost data instead of national PPP indices. National PPP averages can mask huge differences between, say, Mexico City and a small beach town. Our calculator compares actual rent, grocery, and transport prices in each city so the result is more relevant for someone planning a specific relocation.
Should I accept a lower salary if the cost of living is cheaper?
That depends on your priorities. If you are a remote worker keeping your current salary, moving to a cheaper city is a net lifestyle upgrade. If a new employer offers location-adjusted pay, use this tool to check whether the lower number still covers the same standard of living. A 30% pay cut in a city that is 50% cheaper still leaves you ahead.
What does the lifestyle adjustment slider do?
The slider lets you model three scenarios. "Same lifestyle" uses the straight cost ratio. "Upgrade lifestyle" adds 20% on top, showing what you need if you want a nicer apartment, more dining out, or a gym upgrade. "Save more" subtracts 20%, showing the minimum if you are willing to be frugal. This helps you set realistic salary expectations for negotiations.
How accurate are these numbers for real expat budgets?
The data reflects published city-average prices and is updated periodically. Actual expat costs may differ based on neighborhood, imported-goods preferences, and lifestyle choices such as international schools or private healthcare. We recommend using this tool as a baseline and adding 10-15% as a buffer. Pair it with our detailed Cost of Living tool for a deeper dive.
