Got a NYPD ticket at JFK for stopping for a minute. Is it worth fighting?

I was dropping off up family at JFK today and ended up getting a ticket for briefly stopping on the side of the road. Our flight had been delayed and rescheduled, so I pulled over for a minute to check my phone. There were 3 cars in front of me that were also stopped, so I assumed it was some kind of waiting area or cell phone lot. An NYPD officer pulled up behind me and asked if it was an emergency. I explained that we were waiting for our flight and checking the updated information. He pointed to a sign saying stopping was only allowed for emergencies and gave me a summons for 'Not Obeying Signs.'

A fine is likely the only consequence for a civil infraction at JFK, with no points assessed. The airport's strict enforcement is particularly evident when it comes to keeping traffic flowing.

If you choose to attend a virtual ticket hearing, you may be able to avoid a fine if the officer doesn't appear. However, since you've already been issued a ticket, you don't have a strong case to contest it.

The practice of stopping on the side of the expressway is hazardous, and drivers should instead use designated areas like cell phone lots, gas stations, or official stopping places.

It would be beneficial if authorities enforced this rule more consistently.

When pulling over on Van Wyck, be aware that numerous signs clearly indicate that stopping is not permitted. Given the airport's strict enforcement, it's often not worth contesting the fine. A more practical option is to use the cell phone lot or take public transportation, like the L train.
