Calgary Lawn Care: Can I Aerate and Overseed Before Winter?

Жильё 6 answers • owen
I've just bought a house in Calgary with a completely overgrown backyard, overrun with weeds and non-grass wild plant life. I've never managed a lawn before and I'm wondering if there's enough time to aerate and overseed before winter.

It's best to prioritize aeration for now, and worry about the rest of the lawn maintenance later.

Given the minimum soil temperature for grass seed germination is around 10-16 degrees Celsius, it's likely best to wait until spring to overseed. With overnight temperatures dropping, any seeds you plant now will likely be wasted due to the cold soil.

Before winter, overseed your lawn with grass seed and fertilizer. In the spring, dethatch, aerate, and apply more fertilizer. If you want a low-maintenance lawn, consider overseeding with clover, which is rich in nitrogen and attracts bees. It's a great option for filling in bare patches and can thrive in areas with poor soil conditions, requiring less water than traditional grass.

I'm a big fan of clover lawns. They require less water and can tolerate shady conditions, making them perfect for areas with poor sunlight. I've even seen clover thrive in areas where my traditional grass lawn would struggle, like under the garage window where the sun reflects off the glass.

I'm slowly replacing my dandelion-infested lawn with clover. It's a great choice, and when I mow it, the earthy smell is a nice change from traditional grass. Plus, I've noticed an increase in bees and other wildlife in my yard since making the switch.

I'd recommend waiting until spring to tackle your lawn. If you do decide to aerate now, it's up to you. I've had success with Killex, a weed control product that comes in three forms: a hose attachment, a concentrate, or a backpack sprayer. I chose the latter and found it effective in controlling weeds and reviving my lawn. It took some time, but the results were worth it.
