Tulum Taxi Fares Skyrocket to Madrid Levels, Straining Local Budgets
Tulum's taxi fares now rival Madrid's, hitting local residents hard.
What's Changing
The Sindicato de Taxistas Tiburones del Caribe has circulated a new fare table with 24 zones, drastically raising prices. A ride from the center to the coast, which previously cost around 30 pesos, now ranges from 50 to 300 pesos, depending on the zone. These fares are significantly higher than the 2019 state-approved rates, with some increases reaching up to 223 percent for short trips in La Veleta.
What It Means for Residents
Residents and frequent taxi users, like Rafael Pérez, are feeling the pinch. 'Now 50, 60, or 70 pesos affects your daily spending,' he says. The new system, which splits neighborhoods into multiple sectors, creates uncertainty for passengers. Margarita Carmina and Rodolfo Pech highlight the need for a transparent and consistent fare table. 'We need a fare table that is really authorized, visible, and respected by everyone,' says Pech.
Comparisons with Madrid and New York
While Madrid charges approximately 119 pesos for a short trip, Tulum's fares can reach up to 300 pesos. In Madrid, a 100-peso fare is just 6 percent of a day's pay, whereas in Tulum, the same fare takes up a third of an average daily wage. In New York, a $10 cab fare only costs 40 minutes of work for the minimum wage earner. These comparisons highlight the substantial financial burden on Tulum residents.
No Meters, Little Competition
Tulum lacks a taximeter, and the fare is based on printed tables or the driver's word. The zone map further complicates matters, with fares changing based on crossing invisible lines within neighborhoods. Competition, which typically keeps fares in check, is minimal in the area. The absence of a technical study to justify the fare increases adds to the confusion and frustration among residents.
