Tulum’s Dim Streets: A Budget Dilemma and Resident Trade-Offs
Tulum’s streets are getting darker, as the municipality struggles to meet its budget needs and address ongoing issues with its street lighting revenue formula. In the wake of a Supreme Court ruling, Tulum’s 2026 revenue law projects an increase in the street lighting charge, but residents are left with a patchwork repair system that starts only after neighbors report broken lamps.

The increase in the street lighting charge from 2025 to 2026 is about 22 percent, according to the municipality’s budget. However, the exact amount collected and the new collection mechanism remain unclear. The situation is compounded by the municipality’s financial deficit, which is partly due to decreased tourism and economic activity.
For expats and digital nomads, the trade-off here is stark. While street lighting may not be as robust, the quieter, perhaps slower-paced environment can be a draw. But this means accepting a less reliable service, and possibly dealing with the inconvenience of reported repairs taking longer than expected. The question for residents is: are you willing to trade the convenience of brighter streets for the independence of a community-driven repair system?
