I've been getting packages from the US and I'm worried that they'll be inspected now that the exemption is gone. I've heard mixed things about what happens when packages are scanned.

Packages are scanned regardless of whether they're opened or not, as long as the contents and price match the manifest.

The manifest's accuracy is the main factor in determining whether a package is inspected or not.

If the scanner's findings and the declared price are reasonable, customs officers will rely on the manifest's information. However, if the numbers don't add up, the package will be opened for further inspection.

Since the beginning of the year, packages have been taxed based on their declared value, which is a more predictable and fair system compared to the previous method where values were often randomly assigned by customs officers.

Customs officers can request permits and licenses for various items, and they inspect every package, which may lead to delays or additional fees depending on the item being shipped.
