Was it normal for an ambulance to take 45 minutes to arrive in Manhattan?

I recently experienced extreme abdominal pain and had to call 911 multiple times before an ambulance arrived. The first two calls were ignored, and it wasn't until the third call, when my partner was screaming in the background, that they finally responded. I've lost faith in the city's emergency response system. Was this a normal response time, or is this just how it is in the city?

New York's understaffed EMTs are a major contributor to long ambulance response times, which is why we're seeing these issues in the news.

As a former paramedic, I can attest that response times are influenced by a multitude of factors, including how a complaint is made to the dispatcher, the number of other patients calling 911, and the severity of their complaints.

This conversation has made me realize the importance of living close to the ER, and I'm grateful for the convenience of being able to walk or use a ride-sharing service for the half mile.

It's a matter of judgment. People often believe EMS is a taxi service that can get them to the hospital faster and perform any task, but there are limitations to what we can do, and calling EMS won't necessarily get you seen any faster.

There simply aren't enough ambulances on duty to accommodate everyone's needs, and it's unfortunate that a call for abdominal pain wasn't prioritized that day.
