I filed my NY State Tax Return for 2025 through Sprintax, but I recently found out that I paid more than I owed and was asked to file an amendment IT-201-x. However, they cannot tell me how much extra I paid nor does it show anywhere on my account.

If you've overpaid tax, you can request a refund online. However, if you need to adjust your return due to an error that resulted in too much tax being owed, you'll need to identify the mistake and correct it using the IT-201-X form. Sprintax won't recalculate the tax until you've completed the amended return process and corrected the input that led to the incorrect calculation, which may involve revising information such as income or deductions.

Thank you for the clarification. However, I need to amend my return because my IT-201V form shows the amount I owed and paid, but the calculation was incorrect due to an error in the software's processing.

It seems there's a misunderstanding. The IT-201V is merely a payment receipt, indicating the amount of tax owed as calculated by the software. If the amount is incorrect, it's likely due to incorrect information or an error in the return preparation process. To correct the amount, you'll need to initiate an amended return and identify the mistake, which may involve revising your income, deductions, or other relevant details.

The corrected amount should be reflected on the IT-201-X form. Nevertheless, I'm curious - who initiated the request to file an IT-201-X? Was it a random phone call or some other unexpected event?

During a separate conversation with the support center, I also inquired about this matter to confirm the accuracy of the information.
