Neighborhoods with character in Mexico City?

We're planning a trip to Mexico City at the end of the month and want to stay in a neighborhood with character, hole-in-the-wall eateries, markets, and cool architecture. We're not interested in the usual posh recommendations.

Polanco is known for its upscale atmosphere, with high-end shopping and dining options. I had the opportunity to stay there, but I found Roma to be a more charming neighborhood during my next visit.

Centro Histórico is a great recommendation. You could also consider Santa María La Ribera / San Rafael near the subway stations. It's still somewhat 'nice.' Doctores is a good fit because it's getting gentrified, but it still has a gritty feel. Stay near Mercado Hidalgo, and you'll be close to Obrera, which is even grittier but also somewhat hood.

For a more authentic experience, consider staying near the Basílica de Guadalupe, a historic area with a strong local presence. You'll find a mix of local restaurants, markets, and everyday life, as well as good access to public transportation. This part of the city is less touristy than Roma or Condesa, offering a unique glimpse into Mexico City's culture.
