How to handle unwanted conversations in public?

I was waiting for a friend at the TAPO station in Mexico City, and a man in his 60s sat next to me and started talking. He asked me if I was alone, where I lived, my name, and when I was returning. I told him lies and was relieved when my friend arrived and we left. Should I have done something else?

It seems he only tried to start a conversation, but you didn't feel like talking to him, so you just told him lies and left when your friend arrived.

If you don't want to talk to someone, just say so. Not wanting to talk doesn't mean you're being harassed. Learn what harassment is.

I did show him I was uncomfortable, I was wearing headphones and I told him I didn't want to talk to him and I left quickly when I saw my friend.

To be honest, the safety concerns in Puebla are a big issue, so I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation.
