Are smoke detectors required in Halifax apartments?

I recently moved into a new apartment and there aren’t any smoke detectors in the entire unit. I'm a bit concerned that other units may not have them either, and/or have not chosen to purchase them.

Landlords are required to provide smoke detectors in apartments. In Halifax, this is specified in a local by-law. The by-law outlines the responsibilities of landlords and the consequences of non-compliance.

Some smoke detectors are designed to blend in with their surroundings. They might resemble plates with a vented face, similar to HVAC units.

I conducted a thorough search of the apartment, including closets, but couldn't find any smoke detectors. I'm starting to wonder if they're not required after all.

It's in the landlord's best interest to ensure their building is safe. They wouldn't want a fire to occur, which would be devastating for everyone involved.

Smoke detectors are crucial for safety. Without them, you're putting yourself at risk of serious injury or worse. It's essential to have them installed promptly.

Smoke detectors are mandatory in apartments, and landlords are responsible for providing them. If you're having trouble getting one, you can purchase a smoke detector at a local hardware store like Canadian Tire for around $30-$50. I'm not sure if fire extinguishers are also required, but my building has them in the kitchens and they're inspected annually.

The best course of action would be to contact the Fire Marshall's office and report the issue. You shouldn't have to purchase a smoke detector yourself. Document the problem and report it to the Fire Marshall, and if nothing is done, consider involving the tenants' association board.
