I've noticed that you never hear bagpipers practicing outside of parades, but I've heard every other instrument being practiced at some point. What's up with that?

I live in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, where the houses are quite close together. It's not uncommon to hear a bagpipe player practicing at home. The sound can be quite distinct.

As a trumpet player, I'm familiar with the fact that my neighbors can hear me practicing. This experience has given me a new appreciation for the challenges of living near a bagpiper.

Some bagpipe players use a practice form of the instrument that produces much less noise, allowing them to practice at home. However, when they use the full instrument, it can be quite loud. I've seen them practicing in industrial areas on weekends and in large city parks far away from residential areas.

I've never seen bagpipers practicing in city parks, which is surprising given that it's often mentioned as a common location. Perhaps they're not as common as I thought.

If you remove the bag from a bagpipe, it can be played like a recorder and is called a chanter. This version is still audible and can be used for practice, but it's not as loud as the full instrument.

I once dated someone who lived below a bagpiper, and I can attest to the fact that they practice at home - often at all hours of the night. It was a challenging living situation.

Practicing bagpipes indoors after 10 pm can be quite disturbing, especially in residential areas where noise levels are typically kept to a minimum.
