I'm concerned about point no. 14 in the offer letter my wife received from her new employer in Dubai. We're not sure what an 'open contract' means and if it can affect her looking for another opportunity before 5 years. Can someone explain this to us?

In the UAE, open contracts are essentially two-year agreements. The competitor clause is acceptable, but it's unclear how employers would enforce it.

Requiring employees to repay visa costs upon resignation is against the law in the UAE. Furthermore, the contract's wording is poorly written.

Be aware that this company may treat your spouse unfairly if they experience financial difficulties or other issues. Salary delays for staff are likely to be the first solution they consider, unless your spouse holds a high-level position or works in the government sector. The company's intention is likely to recover visa and travel costs by including a 'training cost' of 20,000 in employee contracts.
