Should I Skip Tulum and Spend More Time in Mérida?

I'm planning a trip to the Yucatán Peninsula and would love some advice from people who have visited the area. I'm trying to decide whether Mérida offers a better overall experience, considering its culture, architecture, food, and nearby attractions, compared with Tulum.

Tulum is a popular destination, but I think you can get a good feel for it in just a few hours. The main attractions are relatively close together, and you can easily see the ruins and the surrounding beaches in a short amount of time.

Chichen Itza is a significant archaeological site, but it's worth noting that the site is quite large and can take several hours to explore. If you're short on time, consider focusing on the main pyramid and a few surrounding structures.

I'm planning a day trip to Chichen Itza and a 24-hour stay in Valladolid. It should be a great opportunity to experience the region's history and culture.

Considering the options, I'd suggest skipping Tulum and Cancun. Instead, consider visiting Bacalar, a stunning lake town, or Holbox, a peaceful island getaway. If you do decide to visit Merida, I'd recommend spending more time there to truly experience its culture and history.

Given the time constraints, I'd recommend choosing two destinations and using them as a base for day trips. For a first-time visitor, I think Cancun (beach) and Merida (Mexican culture and history) would be a great combination. From Cancun, you can take a day trip to Tulum to see the ruins, and stop off at Akumal or some cenotes along the way. Alternatively, you could visit Isla Mujeres for a beach day. For an inland destination, Merida offers a wealth of cultural and historical experiences, including the opportunity to visit the nearby Uxmal ruins.

The Uxmal ruins are constantly being expanded and improved. I've had the chance to visit every year and I'm always impressed by the site's beauty and significance.
