SAIT’s Culinary Building Renovations Bring New Opportunities for Students and Calgary
Calgary’s Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) has completed renovations to its John Ware building, home to the School of Hospitality and Tourism. The revitalization, which began in 2017, includes modernized kitchens and a new student-run restaurant, The Highwood Kitchen and Bar. Additionally, SAIT has opened the National Centre for Culinary Arts in this historic building, celebrating its 75-year legacy.

SAIT’s president and CEO, David Ross, highlighted that this development will strengthen the school’s position as Canada’s oldest publicly funded culinary school, essential for the growing visitor economy in Alberta. "I think it does a lot more. I think it brings people together.
I think it allows people to share experiences, and I think it helps define a destination," said Ross. Students are thrilled with the new space, as it sets them up for future success. The provincial government has invested $41 million in the project, with the new facilities expected to boost hands-on learning and industry relevance.
With a new Banff campus set to open in early 2028, SAIT is well on its way to setting a new standard in culinary education.
