From Farm to Cup: How Bali Beans Coffee Is Empowering Local Farmers and Changing Bali’s Coffee Landscape
As a digital nomad in Canggu, Bali, I've been following the coffee scene closely, and it’s exciting to see how companies like Bali Beans are bringing transparency and empowerment to local farmers during the low season.

Bali Beans Coffee, founded in 1985 by Ayu Sudana, has evolved from a simple farm into a woman-led business that connects the entire coffee supply chain-from farming to roasting and serving. Ayu, who is now the CEO, has a clear vision: to shorten the gap between the farmer and the consumer, ensuring both parties benefit.
Seasonal Shifts: Bali’s coffee industry follows a distinct high and low season. During the off-season, from November to March, the focus is on planning, training, and preparation for the next harvest. High season, from April to October, brings in the busy harvest and processing activities. Bali Beans plays a crucial role in this cycle by supporting local farmers and educating consumers.
One of the key ways Bali Beans achieves this is through their farm-to-cup model. This approach ensures that every step of the process, from the soil to the cup, is closely monitored and transparent. It’s not just about the quality of the coffee; it’s also about the quality of life for the farmers and their families.
With a growing number of expats and digital nomads choosing Bali for its laid-back lifestyle, it’s important to know that our choices as consumers can have a positive impact. By supporting companies like Bali Beans, we can contribute to a more sustainable and fair coffee industry.
