Vintage Planes and STEM Fun: Atlanta’s Longest Running Airshow Celebrates Its 50th Year

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First), As temperatures soared on a sweltering Saturday, thousands of Atlanta residents and visitors flocked to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport for the annual Good Neighbor Day Airshow and Aviation Expo. This free event, now in its fifth decade, has become a beloved tradition in the city, drawing families and aviation enthusiasts alike.

Despite the heat, the airshow offered plenty of excitement. Cody Harris, a resident of Chamblee, said, “I’m more impressed than I thought I’d be, honestly.” The event featured not only thrilling flying demonstrations but also hands-on STEM activities, educating attendees on the science and technology behind flight. “Some of the airplanes are old but super professionally maintained, safe to fly, and they are really a piece of history flying,” airshow coordinator Moreno Aguiari explained.

For Hermes Herreras and his grandson, the highlight was the vintage planes. “He loves airplanes. He’s so fascinated,” Herreras said. The family had a front-row seat to see decades-old aircraft performing acrobatic maneuvers above the tarmac.

Jennie Palmer, another Chamblee resident, echoed the excitement: “This has just been awesome. It’s a really cool event.” The airshow’s enduring popularity reflects its commitment to both entertainment and education, ensuring that Atlanta’s aviation legacy lives on.
