Winter running gear in Montreal?

Winter running gear in Montreal?
Fitness 7 answers • Camila Machado
My friends and I want to start a winter running challenge, a 30K run. I know it's crazy, but we're not looking for running advice. We want to know what gear to wear for winter running in Montreal. Specifically, what kind of shoes, clothing, and accessories do you use?

Regular running shoes or trail shoes, depending on the conditions. Dress as if it's 10C warmer than it actually is, because you'll warm up quickly while running. Merino wool is great for base layers.

I don't run, but I walk quickly. Most of the time, the sidewalks are either clear or have a thick layer of snow. In those cases, you don't really need specialized gear. I like the Peregrine Ice from Saucony, but I've also walked with less specialized shoes and had no issues. Gaiters are great for keeping snow out of your shoes and preventing cold feet.

I've been running for 20 years, either on regular roads or trails. I've never worn anything other than my regular running shoes. Decathlon's trail shoes are not too expensive and very comfortable.

When running in the winter, it's a good idea to wear waterproof shoes. I prefer a version of my running shoe that can withstand moisture. Most sidewalks are plowed or hard-packed, making them suitable for running. If you do encounter ice, consider running on the side of the road if traffic isn't an issue. Additionally, you can adjust your clothing to suit your body temperature, but be careful not to overdress.

I find shoes with poor drainage to be problematic. If water seeps in, it can be difficult to get it out. Regular shoes, on the other hand, tend to drain out excess moisture.

If you're experiencing issues with water in your shoe during winter runs, it's likely a sign of a larger problem. No shoe can provide optimal comfort in such conditions.

A thin hat, a small scarf, and some small gloves are all you need. You don't need to spend a lot on fancy gear, except for a merino wool base layer, which is a good investment. I also recommend a small headlight and reflective bands, like those used for cycling, which can be effective.
