Sorting the Sand: What 32 Kilos of Marine Litter at Playa del Pueblo Tells Us
On a recent morning, ZOFEMAT, the environmental cleanup agency in Tulum, sifted through the sand at Playa del Pueblo, uncovering 32 kilos of marine litter, including 200 grams of microplastics and three syringes. This exercise, while seemingly small, reveals the hidden waste on our beloved beaches and raises questions about what we leave behind.

David Buchanan, the general director of ZOFEMAT, explained, 'We are sieving the beach to identify the waste we do not always see and, at the same time, we walk the area to locate the macro waste.' This method allows for a more detailed inventory of the waste reaching our shores, distinguishing between what the current brings in and what is left by beachgoers.
Among the items found were household objects, toothpaste tubes, and shoes, underscoring the responsibility of beach visitors to carry their waste out with them. Buchanan emphasized the importance of using waste stations provided on public beaches. 'It is the cheapest line in any coastal cleanup budget, and the only one a crew cannot carry out on anyone else's behalf,' he noted.
While this exercise is just one day's work, it highlights the ongoing challenge of marine litter and the need for continued vigilance from both locals and tourists. For expats and digital nomads living in or visiting Tulum, it serves as a reminder to be mindful of our impact on the environment and to participate in beach cleanups when possible.
