Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum Brings Beaded Beauty to the Fore in Winter
Winter is quickly approaching, and if you’re looking for a unique and educational experience, head over to the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. The museum is hosting a spectacular exhibition titled ‘Brilliant: The Art of Beaded Footwear Around the World’ from now until April 2028. This isn’t your typical shoe exhibition; it’s an exploration of the intricate art of beadwork on footwear from various regions and periods.

What to Expect: The exhibition features over 85 objects, spanning from Africa, Europe, South Asia, Western Asia, and Turtle Island. From the elaborate Yoruba regalia to Madonna’s iconic platform shoes, the collection showcases the craftsmanship and cultural significance of beaded footwear. Director & Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack will be giving a Curator’s Talk on November 30, providing deeper insights into the exhibition.
Hands-on Experience: If you’re interested in the art of beading, the museum is offering two Indigenous Beading Workshops. One will be held on November 7, where participants will create a beaded poppy, and another on January 23, focusing on hoop earrings. Both workshops are $65 each and are a fantastic opportunity to get your hands dirty and learn a new skill.
Practical Tips: General Admission to the museum is $16. With winter around the corner, this exhibition is a perfect indoor activity to keep you engaged and entertained. Whether you’re a shoe enthusiast, a history buff, or just looking for a unique outing, the Bata Shoe Museum’s latest exhibition is definitely worth a visit.
