€200 Fines for Common Mistakes: Cyclists in Tenerife Must Pay Attention
Living in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, I see a lot of cyclists every day, and it seems the Guardia Civil is keeping a close eye on them. They've announced that cyclists who make a common mistake at pedestrian crossings could face a hefty €200 fine.

The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has highlighted that cyclists must stop before the crossing, dismount, and push their bicycle across. This is to ensure they are treated as pedestrians and given priority. However, there are some exceptions where cyclists may cross while mounted, identified by specific traffic signs like Sign S-45 (crossing exclusive for cyclists) and Sign S-46 (crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists).
Using approved helmets is now mandatory for all cyclists, and riding without one can also result in a €200 fine. Additionally, using mobile phones or headphones while cycling is strictly prohibited, as these can distract and impair reaction times, attracting further fines.
