Puerto Vallarta Kicks Off Sea Turtle Release Season: A Familiar Yet Heartening Sight
As the sun sets over Puerto Vallarta, the ocean air carries with it a sense of anticipation. It's that time of year again-the 2026 sea turtle release season has officially begun. This annual event, which has been a part of our family’s routine since we moved here in 2020, is always a highlight for us.

Every year, the local authorities and volunteers gather to release baby turtles into the ocean, a symbolic act that not only supports the conservation of these endangered creatures but also brings the community together. We, along with other expats and locals, make our way to the beach early in the morning, hoping to catch a glimpse of the tiny hatchlings as they make their way to the water.
It's a little surreal, really. These tiny turtles, barely bigger than a coin, have to face the open ocean knowing that many won't survive. Yet, the sight of even just a few making it to the sea fills us with a sense of hope. It's a reminder that while there are challenges, there are also moments of joy and triumph.
This year, the event felt a bit different. The weather was a little cooler, and there was a hint of uncertainty in the air. But as the volunteers led the hatchlings down to the water, the doubts melted away. The sound of the waves and the sight of the turtles' determined march to the sea was enough to make my wife and I feel a bit more optimistic about the future.
