The single most useful takeaway: While new substations are planned to reduce power outages in Playa del Carmen, residents should expect a wait until the end of the year for these improvements.

Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado has announced plans to invest in new substations to tackle the city's ongoing power outages, which have frustrated many residents. According to Mercado, the goal is to significantly reduce the number of interruptions by the end of 2026, but the actual implementation will take time.

The mayor held a meeting with CFE officials and the state governor, Mara Lezama, to discuss strategies for strengthening the electrical infrastructure. The project involves the construction and renovation of substations, with the participation of private developers and housing groups.

Residents from several neighborhoods, including Misión de las Flores, Xcacel, Las Palmas 1, and Villas del Sol, have expressed their frustration at the constant power outages, which have caused damage to appliances, loss of food and medicine, and interruptions in economic activities and medical care.

Mercado emphasized the need for collaboration among all stakeholders, including the city council, CFE, and developers, to ensure better service for the city's residents. She stated, 'We need to know where the most affected areas are and, from there, work together. The city council is ready to participate so we can guarantee better service for the families of Playa del Carmen.'
