What happens if I take a Panamanian charity

What happens if I take a Panamanian charity director to court for allegedly stealing $20,000?

I made improvements to a $28,000 apartment I was buying through a charity organization, which I'm now being asked to undo for $1,500, after being blocked by the director for over a year. I'm considering taking them to court, but I'm worried I'll lose and be left with a huge bill for lawyer fees.

I would recommend consulting a lawyer. They can advise you on your best course of action and help you understand your options.

When lawyers see who you're up against and the organization they represent, they often back down. You'll end up paying a lot, as they have free lawyers to wear you down for years without giving you a penny.

Your options are to take it to court and see what happens, or to drop it. I don't know what else you want us to tell you. Unless you're one of a specific few people, you'll likely get a favorable outcome if you find a good lawyer and don't go for a cheap one.

It's better to have a bad agreement than a good lawsuit, especially if you're facing someone with a lot of resources.

I don't understand - you say the charity director is stealing around $20,000, but then you mention improvements worth $7,000.

But if you returned the apartment on your own, you lose all your rights. It's like returning a rental car with an option to buy and then giving it back in a worse condition. And a lawyer charging 50% more than the usual fees is a clear sign of how greedy they are. Normally, it's 10%.

To sum it up: you won't lose if you take them to court. The charity director sold the apartment, which was the condition for returning your deposit, so they owe you the money now. The law doesn't allow them to charge you for leaving it as it was, since you made improvements they themselves authorized. If you win, they'll have to pay your lawyer's fees, which are officially between 10% and 25%. No law protects them in particular, but if you call them 'thief' or 'scammer' on social media, that could be considered defamation. It's better not to post anything for now.
