Panama Aims to Shorten Medical Internship to One Year
As a Dutch expat living in Panama City for two years, I have noticed the unique healthcare system in place, particularly the two-year internship that medical graduates undergo. However, recent news suggests this could soon change. Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo announced that a bill is being prepared to reduce the medical internship period from two years to one. This move aims to adapt hospitals and streamline the training process.

The current two-year internship in Panama is a unique feature of the Panamanian medical education system. After completing medical school and passing the certification exam, students can compete for a position at the Ministry of Health (MINSA) or the Social Security Fund (CSS). This period is essential for acquiring the necessary qualifications to practice medicine. However, the new proposal seeks to align Panama with the practices of most Latin American countries, which typically require only one year of internship.
The shorter internship period would likely involve more collaboration between universities and hospitals, potentially altering the balance of practical training and academic education. While it remains to be seen how this will impact the quality of healthcare and the training of future doctors, it’s an important development for the medical community here.
