My husband and I bought a coop in Murray Hill this past January. We have never lived in NYC before, let alone have a doorman. The daytime weekday doorman retired on July 1. Since many residents were away over the summer, including us, a good by party was delayed until next week. This doorman worked for the building for about 20 years and really was a great doorman. Always smiling, always helpful. We want to give him a check as a thank you gift. What do you think an appropriate amount would be?

When I first met my neighbor, I mistakenly thought he was a building staff member and handed him $100. Thankfully, we had a good laugh about it afterwards. It's a good idea to give cash gifts to the building staff, especially the doorman, porters, and superintendent.
