Is it better to sell items on Facebook Marketplace in NYC before moving or after?

I'm planning to sell some furniture and household items when I move to NYC. I'm considering selling them in Philadelphia before I move or bringing them with me and selling in NYC. I'd like to know if people in NYC buy things from Facebook Marketplace and if it's a popular option.

Selling items in New York City can be challenging due to the lack of cars in the city. While it may seem like a larger market, your ability to sell items is limited to your immediate area. For example, if you're trying to sell a large piece of furniture, you may need to rely on buyers who are willing to travel to your location or pay for delivery.

Selling items in New York City, especially furniture, can be a nightmare. You often have to give items away for free or sell them at a significantly lower price than their original value. For instance, a $400 item may need to be listed for $200 to attract buyers, and many people will try to negotiate even lower prices. The cost of moving items can also be a significant barrier, limiting your ability to sell.

When selling used items, it's common for their value to decrease significantly. For example, if an item is worth $400 new, you may only be able to sell it for $200 used, even if it's in excellent condition. This is just the way the market works, and it's not necessarily a loss if you're selling at a lower price.

I've had similar experiences selling musical equipment on Marketplace. For instance, a guitar that would cost $2500 new may sell for $1800 used on other platforms like eBay or Reverb. However, when listing it on Marketplace, I often get lowball offers, such as '$500 and I can come get it now', which is not a realistic price for a high-quality instrument.

I've had positive experiences buying and selling on Marketplace in New York City over the years. When you price items fairly, they tend to sell quickly. The city is a great place to buy and sell items online, especially as a buyer. I've furnished my entire apartment with second-hand items that would have cost thousands of dollars new, and I paid a fraction of that amount.
