Can a landlord refuse online payments to stabilized tenants?

My building recently got a new landlord and they switched to a different platform which said that I have to pay via checks. Annoying but whatever. Then I had a conversation with some of the market rate tenants and turns out that they've been paying rent online this whole time, while my account doesn't have this option. I talked to more people and turns out that the landlord doesn't accept online payments from all rent-stabilized tenants in our building. Is it legal? Is there anything we can do?

It's frustrating when landlords make you mail checks like it's the old days. Probably not against the law as long as they're accepting the payment, but it's just being inconvenient. You could try contacting the city's tenant helpline, but they might just give you the same runaround. One option is to check your bank's automatic bill paying service, which could save you time and hassle.

I used to have my bank cut and mail checks automatically on the first of the month to my landlord. My bank was Charles Schwab, and they handled it efficiently. For a while, I didn't have to worry about sending rent checks manually.

If your bank covers late fees, it might be worth exploring this option. Some banks will automatically cover the fees if your payment is delayed.

When you use bill pay or send a check from your account, your bank might hold the funds until the check clears. This can be frustrating if the check gets delayed or lost. In contrast, writing a check and handing it over to your landlord can be more convenient.

Paying cash might be a bigger headache than dealing with the inconvenience of mailing checks. However, you are entitled to pay cash if you prefer.

I've been paying rent via check for four years, and my bank mails it for me. The building management recently introduced online check or direct debit, but it comes with a 2-4% fee. I'm not willing to pay that extra in rent, so I continue to mail checks. I've never had any issues with this method.
