NYC's New Sidewalk Sheds: Safer, Less Obtrusive and More Inviting
New York City has unveiled new designs for sidewalk sheds, aiming to improve safety and aesthetics for pedestrians. After a significant reduction in the number of active sidewalk sheds, the city is now focusing on redesigning these structures to be more functional and visually appealing. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a 15% decline in active sheds since January, and the new designs by Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) and Arup are meant to address the long-standing criticism of unsightly sheds.

The Baseline Shed, designed by PAU, features transparent polycarbonate decking and an angled roof, allowing natural light to reach the sidewalk while protecting pedestrians from falling debris. The Speed Shed, also by PAU, is a lighter-duty option with an angled roof made of rockfall netting. Both designs prioritize ease of construction and cost-effectiveness, aiming to reduce labor and disruption.
For expats and digital nomads in New York, this change means safer and more inviting sidewalks. As these new designs are rolled out, expect to see less obstruction and better light conditions on your daily walks. While the German in me appreciates the innovation, it’s reassuring to see the city taking steps to improve the public space for everyone.
