I'm setting up a home with my partner, and we're wondering how much it costs for undergrad students to live in Montreal. We're looking for a small studio or a shared room in a colocation, and we want to know about all the monthly expenses and how to minimize them.

My cousin's kids live in an apartment, each with their own room and a roommate, one with his girlfriend and the other with a friend. The couple pays 1400, which is enough for 4 people to watch a game together. I often go there to watch soccer and have dinner with them.

It varies a lot depending on the neighborhood, the size and number of roommates, whether utilities are included, and whether you eat healthy or not. Personally, I try to eat well and avoid fast food in a 4.5 in Verdun. My expenses are: rent 1695, hydro 65, internet 60, groceries 75/week, and insurance 30. With a student income, I get by, but I don't live luxuriously. My biggest expenses are coffee and food.

I have a studio and here are my expenses outside of tuition: rent 780, hydro 40/2 months, wifi 40/month, cell phone 42/month, and groceries 250 or more. For me, groceries are my biggest expense because I try not to restrict my food too much.

I have no idea how you manage to stay under 250 for groceries in 2026. I used to be able to do it in 2024, but it's gotten worse since then.

If you go low on protein, you can stretch your food budget. For example, you can make congee or egg custard with ground meat and eggs. It also depends on the person's size and eating habits. For example, a small woman might be able to get by with half the amount of food an average man needs.

It costs around 2000 CAD per month to have a decent life.
