Chicago High School - Jones vs. Whitney Young vs. Payton vs. Lane?

My partner and I are setting up a home in Chicago. I'm trying to decide on a high school for our 8th grader who got a perfect score and perfect grades last year. They're interested in Science and Engineering, have a long commute to school every morning, and want a good social scene and a pretty campus. They also want freedoms like off-campus lunch and want to be on cross-country and soccer teams.

A crowded Lane would be a significant drawback for me.

I think a lot of people would agree with me on this. With over 4,000 students, Lane and Taft are much larger than most high schools. This means that making a varsity team or getting individual help from administrators becomes much more difficult. For comparison, there's only one high school in the entire state of Michigan with an enrollment of around 3,000 students.

It's difficult for me to provide a recommendation for Lane, as I'm not familiar with the school. However, I do know that it's a large institution with over 4,000 students. If your child struggles with organization, navigating the campus can be challenging. On the other hand, Lane offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including cultural and hobby-based clubs. If having access to a diverse array of enrichment options is a priority, Lane might be a good fit.

If your child has been accepted into all of the top schools, it's a good problem to have. However, it's still too early to worry about high school. My advice would be to focus on the school that excels in non-academic areas.
