First Visit to Panama City: A Complete Impression
Panama City is safe, uses USD currency, has efficient metro from the airport, and offers incredible local food for $6, but Spanish is essential as English isn't widely spoken. The city has a peaceful atmosphere, welcoming locals, and modern infrastructure. Here's what to expect on your first visit to Central America's most cosmopolitan capital.
Language and Communication
Spanish is the dominant language throughout Panama City. While some English is spoken in tourist areas and businesses, you'll find it beneficial to learn basic Spanish or carry a translation device. Don't expect English to be widely available—many locals and businesses operate primarily in Spanish. Having language skills will significantly improve your experience.
Currency and Payment Systems
The US Dollar (USD) is the official currency, making financial transactions straightforward for American visitors. Apple Pay and other digital payment methods are widely accepted on the metro system, which is convenient if you plan to use public transportation. However, cash is still useful in smaller establishments and markets.
Getting Around: The Metro and Transportation
The metro train system is fairly efficient and well-maintained. One of the best-kept secrets is that you can use it directly from the airport, which would have saved me a significant taxi fee. I recommend using the metro when possible—it's affordable, reliable, and you can use Apple Pay to purchase tickets. Uber and ride-sharing services are available but costs add up quickly. The metro is your most economical option.
The People and Safety
Panamanians are generally hardworking, welcoming people. During my stay, I wasn't hassled once, whether in shops, markets, or establishments. The city feels peaceful and relatively safe, especially in tourist areas and commercial districts. From what I observed during my visit, the city maintains a calm atmosphere.
Food and Dining
Panama City offers incredible dining variety. You'll find standard American fast-food chains (McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Papa John's), but the real treasure is the local restaurant scene. Small, family-owned businesses serve authentic, affordable meals. I discovered a restaurant near Estación Iglesia Del Carmen serving Arroz con Pollo for just $6—a hearty meal that would sustain you for 8-12 hours. These local establishments are the essence of the city and represent genuine Panamanian food culture. I highly recommend supporting these businesses rather than chains.
Unique Characteristics
Several things stood out during my visit. First, the abundance of casinos—there seems to be one in almost every district. Second, many vehicles feature extremely dark window tints, which is less common in other cities. This is likely due to the intense tropical heat and strong sun.
Shopping and Commerce
Panama City doesn't have a centralized shopping district. Instead, shopping opportunities are spread throughout different neighborhoods. You'll find Allbrook Mall in one area, Multiplaza in another, and various commercial zones scattered across the city. This means you need reliable transportation to access different shopping areas. For example, the Metromall is at least 15-20 minutes by metro from some neighborhoods.
Climate Considerations
Panama City is hot and humid year-round. The tropical climate is intense, and there are only two seasons: dry season (summer) and rainy season (winter). There are no four distinct seasons like in temperate climates. The humidity is notably high, especially during the rainy season. I showered twice daily to cope with the heat and moisture.
Transportation and Mobility
While the city could benefit from more bike lanes and cycling infrastructure, walking is common in certain areas. The city would greatly improve with better bicycle transportation options and dedicated cycling paths. This would reduce traffic congestion and make the city more accessible. Currently, reliable cabs and ride services like Uber are necessary for most transportation needs.
Is It Worth Visiting?
Panama City is a worthwhile destination, especially if you enjoy the holistic feel of a city—its culture, people, and urban atmosphere—rather than just activities like snorkeling or safaris. The hardworking vibe is admirable, and you'll encounter genuine hospitality. If you're considering staying longer or investing in property here, I recommend spending more time to get a fuller sense of the city before making decisions. A few days provides initial impressions, but a week or two reveals deeper insights into daily life.
Final Thoughts
Panama City is a destination that exceeds expectations in many ways. The people are welcoming, the food is authentic and affordable, and the city has a genuine energy that's worth experiencing. If you visit, learn some Spanish, use the metro, support local restaurants, and give yourself time to explore. You might just fall in love with this Caribbean city.
