What happens if MTA police ask for proof of payment?

I'm a software worker who's been living in New York since 2018, and I've been using my OMNY card to pay for public transportation. I'm concerned about being stopped by MTA police for not having proof of payment, especially since I've never seen this happen before on a bus, and I'm wondering if it's a new policy or a random occurrence.

It's unusual for them to do this on a bus, but they often stop entire routes for 15 minutes at a station to check receipts.

The situation was alarming, and we were all looking around, wondering if someone had been injured. People were also leaving the scene, which didn't help the situation. The bus was delayed for a long time, and the delay was not announced in advance.

The EAGLE team's attempt to check people's tickets caused a lot of upset. They don't have the power to arrest people who refuse to show ID or get a ticket, so many just ignored them.

I'm surprised that this hasn't happened before. Many people may not be aware of how the fare enforcement process works.

You can tap your physical OMNY card on the machine to provide proof of payment.
