Why is the sound so bad at the Bell Centre?

I've been to six concerts at the Bell Centre this year and the sound quality has been terrible each time. The sound is muffled, the speakers distort and crackle. I've even tried using earplugs to block out the noise, but it doesn't make much of a difference. The seats are expensive, and it's disappointing to have such poor sound quality.

It's because it's a hockey arena first and a concert venue second. There's a lot of reverberation in this type of space, so if you're not directly in the cone of the high speakers, it's pretty cacophonous. I think artists choose to play at arenas because they can sell more tickets. For comparison, try going to a smaller venue like the Club Soda, where there are no bad seats. The Maison symphonique is also impressive, and it's not the volume that's impressive, but the silence.

Yes, when the groups I like play at other venues, I jump at the chance. But some artists only play at the Bell Centre...

Yes, many big names don't want to play in front of fewer than 10,000 people. And some very big names don't come because there's nothing over 30,000. One thing is sure, it's not the kind of show for audiophiles.

Most hockey arenas are multifunctional, and the Bell Centre was primarily designed for hockey. That's why it's the preferred arena for many NHL players, but the sound isn't great throughout the arena.

I prefer the lower bowl in front of the stage, as the sound is decent there. In fact, it's much better than at outdoor concerts or the Olympic Stadium.

You need to be in the lower red seats or near the console on the floor to get good sound.

Stadiums sound like crap, generally. It's not built with acoustics in mind.

The worst concert I've seen was at the Bell Centre. I paid for a ticket to see Paul McCartney a few years ago. We were high up on the sides and when it started, I thought the sound quality was just temporary, but no, it was that bad for the whole show! I felt like I was watching a show through a fence to avoid paying the entrance fee because the sound was so bad. Even the cheaper seats weren't given out.
