I've noticed someone digging through blue bins on private property in my neighborhood, Panorama, Calgary. I'm concerned it might be trespassing.

I wouldn't worry about people rummaging through blue bins as long as they don't leave a mess. However, it's common for them to waste their deposit by throwing recyclables into the bins. To avoid this, place non-recyclable items on the ground beside the bins.

Unless they're leaving a mess, consider the blue bin rummagers to be quality control. If they're not causing any issues, you can just let them do their thing and get on with your day.

We've had a similar issue with someone rummaging through our bin last night. We've tried talking to them and putting up a sign saying no refundables, and it seems to help sometimes. At least they never leave a mess behind. To avoid losing your recyclables, make sure to keep them out of reach.

These blue bin rummagers have been around almost as long as the blue bin program in Panorama has existed.

There's an older Asian lady who regularly rummages through the blue bins in Canyon Meadows. She's never left any kind of mess or gone onto private property.

I have an elderly Asian woman who frequently visits my alley in the southwest and is a blue bin rummager. She's friendly and causes no harm, so I think she's doing a good thing.
