Just when things seemed to be settling down in Tulum, another cost is on the horizon. Starting next year, Quintana Roo's state government has approved a hike in tourist fees, with the nonresident fee set to rise to 1,158 pesos for a seven-night stay, up from 983 pesos in 2026. This hike affects not only short-term visitors but also those of us who call Tulum home, as many of us rely on tourism to some extent.

The increase is part of a broader economic package proposed by the federal government, which includes a 17.8 percent rise in the entry fee for foreign visitors. This move comes as hotel occupancy in the area remains below last year's levels, leaving many to question the value for money for each of these charges.

The breakdown of these charges is crucial for understanding their impact. For a seven-night stay, the new fee structure will add approximately 3,068 pesos, including a federal nonresident fee, a state visitor charge, a municipal environmental fee, and a state lodging tax. These fees, while they may seem like a small percentage of a larger bill, can add up, especially for those of us living on a tight budget or relying on tourism for income.

The nonresident fee, which was 860.56 pesos in 2025 and 983 pesos in 2026, is now set to be 1,158 pesos for 2027. This is a 17.8 percent increase, reflecting the federal government's goal to strengthen the National Institute of Migration. While the increase is not as steep as initially proposed, it's still a notable change that will be felt by the local community.

For expats and digital nomads, this means a slight adjustment in our budgets. If you're planning a trip to Tulum next year, expect to pay a bit more for your stay. For those of us who are based here, it's a reminder to keep an eye on these fees as they can impact our bottom line. Whether you're a long-term resident or a short-term visitor, staying informed about these changes is crucial for managing your finances effectively.
