Tulum's Taxi Fares: Meters or Zone Boards?
The state of Quintana Roo wants taximeters in every taxi in Tulum, but the local taxi union has other plans. Their 24-zone fare board has caused confusion, and the state says it's not authorized.
According to Imoveqroo head Hernández Kotasek, taximeters are the way forward, not zone boards. He argues that the current fare increases are already being applied informally by drivers, and that a meter system would bring more transparency and fairness to the industry.
The new fare board, published by the union, sees significant increases in fares, with some destinations increasing over 222.6 percent compared to the 2019 state table. However, it lacks the necessary authorization and official seals, raising questions about its legitimacy.
The state is restructuring public transport across the region, moving from individual permit holders to operating companies paid per kilometer. This change could impact how taxi fares are set and enforced in the future.
