Tulum's Pothole Problem Persists: A Family's Perspective
Tulum's newly paved streets, only two to three centimeters thick, have led to frequent potholes reopening after each rain. This issue is particularly noticeable in the older, downtown areas where concrete curbs and proper base layers still hold up. The thin asphalt exposes the limestone base, causing it to soften and form potholes. The municipality uses cold-mix asphalt patches that quickly fail, leading to recurring repair costs and a maintenance problem that the city struggles to address.

Motorcycles and bicycles are most vulnerable to pothole accidents due to their balance on small tire patches, making them the most affected by the recurring potholes in Tulum. As a family living in Tulum for over five years, we have experienced firsthand the inconvenience and safety concerns these potholes pose.
While the city's pothole repair program has addressed some areas, the problem persists in many parts of the city. The constant cycle of potholes reopening after each rainstorm highlights the need for a more comprehensive solution that addresses the underlying issues of the thin asphalt and the municipality's patching methods.
