Surfing in Sayulita in December: Is it colder and do I need a wetsuit?

We're planning a trip to Sayulita in mid-December and want to know if the water temperature is colder than usual. We've only surfed there in October before, and we're wondering if we'll need long sleeve rash guards or a wetsuit. Any advice is appreciated.

The water temperature in Sayulita varies from year to year, but last year it was around 18-19°C. If you're coming from a colder water location, you might find it suitable for surfing without a wetsuit. However, the warmer water this time of year is due to El Niño, and it's possible that the temperature could drop by the time you arrive. I'd be happy to help with board rentals, video sessions, or show you the best spots in Sayulita.

Warm, but be prepared for crowds and maybe some pollution in the water

When it comes to rentals or guided trips, consider booking with a local business. They often know the best spots and can provide a more authentic experience.

During my visit to Sayulita, I found that the waves on the beach were generally smaller and less consistent. I preferred to drive out to La Lancha, where the waves were more lively. Additionally, I noticed that the water was quite oily and not as clean as I'd like.

We're actually staying in San Pancho for this trip, but we have connections in Sayulita, so we plan to spend some time there as well.
