I'm considering studying Industrial Engineering but I'm torn between UPRM and Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. I live in Santurce and Poly is closer, but my family is pressuring me to choose UPRM in Mayagüez. I'm worried about the cost and living expenses.

If you want to save money and have a good experience starting out, I recommend starting at UPR Bayamón. From there, you can transfer to Mayagüez. You'll also get to know a Corillo close by who can potentially host you later on.

From what I've heard, it can be challenging to find internships and job opportunities, especially considering the number of students graduating.

The problem with Poly is that anyone with a pulse and basic math skills can get in. But then they drop out because they can't handle the workload. In Mayagüez, the students who get in are actually prepared for the challenge.

About 95% of my classmates had a job or found one within 6 months after graduation. The curriculum also offers 100% online options, so you can balance your coursework with work or personal life. Additionally, there are no issues with gender-neutral bathrooms or cancelled classes due to protests.

I'm not aware of the exact costs of studying there, but I've heard that scholarships can cover most of the expenses.

Honestly, I don't know the exact cost, but my friends who receive the Pell grant cover about 60% of their expenses. The rest is around 4-5k per trimester for full-time students.

I started as an engineer in high school and did research in the Industrial department. Poly's faculty is top-notch, so you'll be well-prepared for the workforce or a graduate program. However, the bachelor's degree in Mayagüez takes 5 years, and some classes may not be offered every year. You can always do a co-op or work-study program.

Thanks for the info! I'm currently in an advanced program where we get to skip basic classes after passing an exam. I'm also looking for a university with a good atmosphere for socializing. If you don't mind me asking, how was your experience living on campus?
