Traffic Noise Hits Over 80% of Residents in Santa Cruz, La Laguna, and Puerto de la Cruz
Over 80% of residents in Santa Cruz, La Laguna, and Puerto de la Cruz are dealing with traffic noise levels that exceed the World Health Organization's recommended limit. As the owner of a surf school in Santa Cruz de Tenerife since 2017, this news hits close to home, affecting not just residents but also small businesses like mine.

The Canary Islands government's study reveals that nearly 96.4% of Santa Cruz’s population and 82.2% of La Laguna’s are affected by traffic noise levels above 55 decibels. The TF-5 highway, which runs through these areas, is the main culprit, with 67,000 people along 55.6 kilometers of the motorway subjected to noise levels above 55 decibels.
For Santa Cruz, the situation is dire, with only 3.6% of residents below the reference level, and 17.6% reporting significant disturbance from traffic noise. La Laguna faces an even greater challenge, with 82.2% of its population impacted, and some sections experiencing nearly 90,000 vehicles daily. Outside the metropolitan area, Puerto de la Cruz also faces high noise levels, affecting 81.2% of its inhabitants.
While the noise levels do not automatically violate Spanish law, the Real Decreto 1367/2007 sets maximum limits for residential areas at 65 decibels during the day and evening and 55 decibels at night. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels can lead to sustained stress, increased heart rate, and other health issues.
As an expat running a surf school, this news is particularly concerning. It highlights the need for more effective noise reduction strategies and infrastructure improvements. If you're a business owner or renter in these areas, it's crucial to stay informed and advocate for better solutions to mitigate the noise pollution.
