Janal Pixan 2026: Puerto Morelos Welcomes the Season with Cultural Celebrations
As we approach the end of October, Puerto Morelos is preparing for Janal Pixan 2026, a festival that intertwines the Day of the Dead with Mayan traditions. For expats and digital nomads like myself, who call Puerto Morelos home, this event offers a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the area's cultural heritage.

The festival, which runs from October 24 to November 2, features a series of events in both the municipal center and the Leona Vicario community. Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, the president of the municipality, encourages locals and visitors alike to participate, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and sharing these traditions with future generations.
One of the highlights is the ‘Mar de Almas’ festival on October 24, where you can witness traditional competitions and cultural performances. On October 30, Leona Vicario will host the ‘Alma y Raíz’ festival, complete with a Paseo de Ánimas and a ritual welcoming the ancestors. The festive atmosphere will continue through the 2nd, with various events including a procession of decorated boats and musical performances.
For those of us who have been calling Puerto Morelos home since 2018, these events are a reminder of the deep cultural roots and the community's commitment to preserving its heritage. Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor, Janal Pixan 2026 is definitely worth the trip.
